Cultural Lag

The other day, in class, my sociology teacher brought up cultural lag. Even though we live in a very advanced society full on new technology, we still experience cultural lag. The reason why schools take a summer break is because, when Earth was made up of mostly farmers and people had to farm in order to survive, children would take the summer months off of school to help harvest the fields.

To hear him say this it made me think that children have not helped harvest fields for hundreds of years. So it raises the question, should all schools switch to year round school?

As someone who has never had year-round school, it is hard for me to think about if I would enjoy it or not. I think I wouldn't because even though you get breaks through out the school year, it is nice to know that I will have a whole 3 months away from school and not 1-2 weeks.

I know that after my classmates and myself come back from a 2 week long holiday break, we are virtually zombies, walking around school for the first week back. I think if we had year round school and had random breaks every 6 weeks, students would constantly be in that groggy phase after a 2 week break.

With a whole 3 month break, students get the rest they need and by the end of the break, students look forward to coming back to school.

What do you all think? Which would you prefer?

  1. I think year-around school is becoming more of a necessity as time goes on. With breakthroughs occurring in multiple fields of science, students need to be prepared more so than ever for their future careers. technology has completely changed our society, and i think an elongated school year would allow schools to go more in depth with their subjects. But that is just my opinion; I've never had year around school either.

  2. I see your point about the groggy state that the students are in after a short break. Though I do enjoy having a longer break during summer, a year-round school year seems to make more sense as almost none of us are farmers anymore. If we had shorter breaks, we might be able to spend less time reviewing things from last year, and more time learning new things

  3. The most efficient system would involve year round school so that students wouldn't need so much review, however, said system would be very tedious for the students. Interesting post

  4. I believe that school how we have it is the best for us. Not to sound trite but if its not broke why try to fix it? I think we do best with the break because by the end of it were all extremely ready to go back.

  5. This is ridiculous! Of course we need a 3 month school break! I understand that we no longer have farms to tend to, but to compensate, school days are much longer and challenging than ever before! If you were working a farm you didn't have to worry about your physics or chemistry homework! Throw in extra-curricular activities into the equation and you have no free time! Our time off gives us a break from all the stress!

  6. I like the 3 month summer break, but I do think that it would be more beneficial to educate year round with more frequent breaks.

  7. You would still get the same number of weeks off that you would normally get in the summer. However, those breaks would be spread out over the course of 12 months...spring break, summer break, fall break, winter break etc. The human mind would stay sharper with shorter breaks.

  10. Team summers! I love having my time off, the month of august was literally invented just for the brain to get back in the swing of education. Plus, I think summers are beneficial to college students, so if k-12 was made year-round would college students still get summers? Who knows. Interesting post!
