Is Violence Glorified?

In class today, my teacher asked us if we, as honors students, believe our society is "Violent." The answers amongst my peers were mixed. Some thought that our society is violent, some thought it wasn't, and some thought about comparing two different nations and comparing the violence rates of both and finding out that way.

One of my classmates, who though or society is violent, brought up that almost every movies that was nominated at the Oscars were violent movies. In fact, the night's two big winners, The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road, are know as action/violent films. On top of winning multiple awards, they grossed big bucks at the box office.

In fact, if you were to look up, the most popular movies of all time, a good number of them would be action flicks. Television is the same way. There are shows like American Horror Story, Law and Order: SVU, and Criminal Minds, that make violence, crime and murder "Glorified." These shows are some of the most viewed shows on television.

When people watch these shows, and movies, do they get a false aspect of Crime and Punishment?

Do these shows and movies show an accurate portrayal of Crime and Punishment?

Is violence Glorified, in our opinion?

  1. I think to a degree the media does have an impact on deviance. Especially with a lot of movies and TV shows that are currently popular; a lot of main characters in some of our favorite shows are anti-heroes.

  2. I definitely think that these shows have an impact on our society. However, I would almost make the point that a lot of these movies and shows are portraying the bright side of crime (i.e. when a police officer catches a murderer or when the drug dealer is sentenced to prison). Even Mad Max is considered a good guy who we want to win against an oppressive regime!

  3. I think that some movies and television shows are too violent and impact society's views on violence, but I also think others do a good job of showing the horrors of violence in order to create sympathy and understanding in society.

  4. Violence is definitely very prevalent in our media, but, as HonestAbe said, many of them show the violence being punished. The amount of violence is still a bit excessive in my personal opinion

  6. These shows and films are definitely entertaining but how much of it do we really take for face value? It is simply entertianment. I remember when it was a big deal that teens were playing 'violent' video games because it could create bad behavior in them. However this behavior is learned not just from one outlet. Many other parts play into violence not just mass media! If we ask is society violent and only base it off of that, of course its violent! But there are so many other contributors to how our society behaves!

  7. I feel as if violence is very glorified. When I went and watched the revenant, I was astonished. A women was raped, and everybody was trying to kill each other. These are not the movies I would ever think to win an award.
